The Northlands Community Garden Project

In the summer of 2012, the Northlands Community Garden Society began the transformation of an unused baseball diamond into a community garden, outdoor classroom and gathering space for the community.

The facility offers members a healthy outdoor activity to participate in close to home. Members and visitors alike will learn about environmental stewardship and enjoy the recreation space.

The Northlands Community Garden is a fenced 16,500 square foot area.  The design features 60 garden plots, a gazebo/outdoor area, a shed and a stage/deck built into the old baseball backstop.

The garden will also feature indigenous shrub borders for use as a teaching device and to give the space a park-like atmosphere.

We also plan to have workshops on gardening-related topics, composting, and traditional uses of local plants.

Accomplishments

In the past 2 years, our organization has contributed over 400 volunteer hours.

We completed the building of planters for gardening, constructed a shed for supplies, built a temporary fence and cleaned up the site.

In addition to this, we hosted events in the garden such as the Wendy Bisaro constituency BBQ 2012 and 2013 and a fundraiser “ Cappuccino and pastry in the Garden” complete with music and food.

We continue to seek new members and are slowly making the community aware of our presence.

Our goals for this season are to fundraise to raise enough money to build a chain-link fence around the perimeter.
